All things Nexus and Lolipop

Google announced some major updates to its Nexus range and the new Android version yesterday: Android: be together, not the same.  Basically announced a new phone (Nexus 6), a new tablet (Nexus 9), a new streaming device (Nexus Player) and an update to Android (Lolipop).  Apart from the Nexus Player, all the announcements were pretty much expected.

Android Police has provided a very good summary of everything announced yesterday: [All The Things] Here Are All Of Google's New Android 5.0 Lollipop And Nexus Announcements

My initial thoughts:

- Nexus 6: very big and is now priced at flagship high end territory. Specs are clearly flagship though. They have also clearly gone for the phablet route, copying pretty much most Android players now (and Apple). However, I think people have been used to cheaper Nexus phones over the years, with not necessarily flagship specs though. In this case though, it does means the N6 going to have to justify its price and compete with the likes of the Note 4, LG3, HTC One M8, Samsung S5, etc and, hate to say it, the iphone 6s. Previously I would not consider a Nexus phone competing with an iphone, but now they have gone down the flagship route.....

- Nexus 9: Again flagship specs. Going to replace the Nexus 7 and 10. Price seems about right though. Have to see how battery fares and bit disappointed they didn't offer a 64GB model.

Nexus Player - Bit of a surprise. While everyone was expecting the N6 & 9 due to the massive leaks, there had been no leaks about a Nexus Player. Price is competitive and clear competition to the Amazon Flyer TV and Roku boxes. Competitive pricing as well. However lack of ethernet is a shame.

Lolipop: Due to the preview releases everyone knows in effect what to expect from this. Will be available for my current devices (N5, N7 & Moto G (2013)), so that is good. I am looking forward to Google working on sorting out battery life, which is a major issue especially on my N5.

So far there have been no indications on Hong Kong availability. I think at the very least the N6 and N9 will be available in Hong Kong eventually (probably not initial launch). I am, however not sure whether the Nexus Player will be available in Hong Kong, however am hopeful.

Out of the announcements I am looking forward to the N9 and the Nexus Player. I will probably end up buying the N9 when it is available in Hong Kong, and may consider getting the Nexus Player.
