The (live TV streaming) party is over

Back in February I wrote about a couple of options of live TV streaming: Live TV in Hong Kong, a whole new level.  I had compared two boxes, the Maige box and an Android box.

Since February, at home we had pretty much settled for the Maige box and it has been great for the World Cup as well.

However, it seems the party is over, as yesterday the Maige box was all over the news and several people were arrested by HK Customs officers for breaching copyright law in HK.  Here is the article in the Hong Kong Standard newspaper: Customs nabs World Cup TV cheats.

I had stated previously that using these boxes were clearly not completely legal and there was no guarantee that their services would continue working, so I guess I cannot be surprised if the service does stop working.

And, last night the Maige box was no longer working in Hong Kong.  It seems that Maige has blocked Hong Kong IP addresses from accessing its servers.  I was able to connect via a VPN (by setting up VPN access on my router) and using a US IP address.  However if I was to use that all the time, all my traffic would route to the US IP address, considerably slowing down my internet connection.  Also, I guess the long term question is will the Maige service eventually shut down in its entirety, I guess there is no guarantee that it will continue running, especially now that it has caught the eye of law enforcement agencies in Hong Kong.

I have no doubt that the Hong Kong authorities will be in touch with their counterparts in China.  We all know that China is a haven for counterfeit goods and products, however in this instance some big Hong Kong billionaires are involved and it is extremely likely that they will exert their influence.

It however seems, that at present, the Android box remains to work, but at the moment the big downside with the Android box is that it doesn't have many sports channels showing the World Cup.

Oh well, I guess all good things must come to an end.
